Edward Norton hosts UNDP Equator Prize 2012

0 Comments 22 Juni 2012

The “UNDP Equator Prize 2012″ was probably the fastest and most random award ceremony I ever attended. Forget the Academy Awards, this was so much more exciting.

Edward Norton, UN Goodwill Ambassador for Biodiversity (random nr. 1),  handed over 25 awards to local initiatives plus 10 additional awards in special categories (Community-based Adaptation, Biodiversity, Drylands, Food, Water, Energy, Forests, Oceans, Waste and Women’s Empowerment) in less than two hours.

The awards recognize outstanding local initiatives that are working to advance sustainable development solutions for people, nature and resilient communities, such as the “panda-friendly” medical herb convention from China and the TYR Oyster Women’s Association from Gambia (random nr. 2).

The highlight of the evening was definitely the musical performance by Gilberto Gil, a Brazilian legend and former Minister of Culture (random nr. 3).

No, seriously, the event was definitely one of the most energetic and inspiring during the Rio+20 Summit…
